Around mountain camps they're affectionately known as stump grizzlies. They arrive without invitation, inspect every backpack, poke their noses into forgotten boots, and somehow manage to look completely innocent when caught in the act. Despite their stripes, they aren't chipmunks at all, but golden-mantled ground squirrels—curious little residents of the Rockies with a whole second life beneath the forest floor. Hidden under tree roots and sheltered rocks are burrows where they raise their families, store food, and sleep away the long mountain winter. They may be among the smallest wild neighbors we meet, but they remind us that the greatest adventures are often happening just beneath our feet.

Some friendships are a little like bees. They quietly go about making the world more beautiful, asking for very little while giving so much. This painting was inspired by my dear friend Lisa, a natural beekeeper whose appreciation for these remarkable creatures reminded me that even the smallest lives can have an extraordinary impact. May this little bee be a reminder that kindness, like pollination, spreads farther than we ever know. 

A red fox hunts mostly by sound. Hidden beneath the snow, a mouse is often heard long before it is seen. With ears tuned to the faintest rustle, the fox measures the distance, gathers itself, and leaps high into the air, diving nose-first through the snow. Most attempts are unsuccessful, but patience, practice, and persistence are often rewarded.
